Senior Nutrition Supplemental Program
The Senior Nutrition Supplemental Program is designed to help seniors that are living at or below the poverty level to help supplement their daily nutrition and dietary needs.
The supplemental food is stored and staged at the Marion-Polk Food Share warehouse. The supplemental food is distributed to the seniors at their housing complex on a scheduled day and time once a month. Prior to the scheduled distribution day, the items are staged at MPFS on rolling racks and then transferred by MPFS truck to the designated site. The truck is met by MPFS volunteers and seniors from the resident. The rolling racks are placed in the complex's community room and staged as a "shopping style" pantry. This enables the seniors to choose items that best meet their nutrition and dietary needs.
The supplemental program enables homebound seniors and seniors without transportation to receive nutritional food on a monthly basis. Seniors that access the monthly distribution not only experience an improvement in their nutrition and health, but are able to stretch their budget by saving money on food cost. Therefore, the seniors are not faced with the difficult decision of having to choose between buying food or other life sustaining necessities, such as medicine, medical help, rent, or utilities.
Homebound Emergency Food Delivery
Marion-Polk Food Share is partnering with several community volunteers to deliver emergency food to those in the community who are homebound, and who are living on a limited income with a limited support system to provide for their needs.
Community volunteers and Food Pantries are able to deliver a 3-5 day supply of emergency food those in need of assistance with a 24 hour notice. The present services have been established within the Salem/Keizer area or in outlying communities such as Aumsville, Stayton, Lyons, Independence, Monmouth, and Dallas.
