Brighten A Life

Hunger Ninja Kat here to wish you a Happy New Year!  I’ve been a little broody in my blog posts the past couple of months, so I’ve resolved to bring new meaning to “matters of taste” in this post, starting with a few of my favorite food jokes:

Since as Fran Lebowitz says, “Food is an important part of a balanced diet,” I’d like to start by calling your attention to the Four Basic Food Groups:  Fast, Frozen, Instant, and Chocolate, and remind you that, despite our incessant denial, if you eat something but no one else sees you eat it, it has zero calories.  Eat all your meals in a closet and you’ll never have to worry about getting into shape.  You’ll automatically be a triangle!  Just kidding.  As Program Director for the Community Kitchen here at the Food Share, you know I’m totally into promoting healthy cooking, which Henry Beard and Roy McKie define as “the art of using appliances and utensils to convert ingredients and seasonings into excuses and apologies.”  Oh well, no apologies needed. Come on over to my house if you want a balanced meal and I’ll give you a cookie for each hand!

Now seriously…There is a great quote by Sydney Smith about New Year’s resolutions that goes:

Resolve to make at least one person happy every day, and then in ten years you may have made three thousand, six hundred and fifty persons happy, or brightened a small town by your             contribution to the fund of general enjoyment.

Since my job is ending hunger, of course my brain automatically mashes this up with Mother Teresa’s “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one” to get:

Resolve to feed at least one person every day, and then in ten years you have fed three thousand, six hundred and fifty people, or brightened the life of a small town by your contribution to the fund of shared compassion.

Not being hungry would definitely make somebody happier.  3,650 happier people here in NE Salem where I live and work would definitely make my neighborhood a happier place.  What if you did the same thing in your neighborhood?  In a year’s time, we’d have over 7,000 happier people running around!  Wow.  Get your brother-in-law, your pastor, and your hairdresser to join in and we’d be well on our way to several small towns’ worth of happier people.  Can you even imagine?

Why not?  Why not go for it, especially when it is so easy to feed one person by volunteering some time, running a food drive in your church, school, business, or neighborhood, or becoming a donor or Sustainer for Marion-Polk Food Share?  We may not be able to end hunger by ourselves, but if we get everyone involved in making sure all of our neighbors are able to join us in the happy dance, what a world we could make for ourselves!
