End of Year Giving FAQ

Q: Are donations to Marion-Polk Food Share tax-deductible?

A: Yes! Gifts made to Marion-Polk Food Share are tax-deductible under IRS guidelines, provided no goods or services were received in exchange for the donation. You will receive a receipt letter that you may use for tax purposes.

Q: When are the Food Share offices closed during the holidays?

A: Our offices are open Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. During the holidays ,we will be closed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (December 24th and 25th). We will be open on New Year’s Eve (December 31st) from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and closed on New Year’s Day (January 1st).

Q: Can I make an end-of-year gift even if your office is closed?

A: Yes! There are several ways to make a donation to Marion-Polk Food Share after our offices close for the New Year holiday on Monday, December 31st. However, in order for donations to be considered eligible as a 2018 charitable gift:

  • Gifts made by check must be postmarked by 12/31/18 or received in person by Food Share staff on or before 12/31/18.
  • Gifts made by credit card must be processed by 12/31/18. Gifts can be made online up until 11:59 pm on 12/31/18.
  • If you prefer to make your credit card gift via mail, phone, or in person it must be received at the Food Share office by 5:00 pm 12/31 to be eligible for the 2018 tax year.
  • Gifts made online via electronic check/direct debit by 12/31/18 are considered eligible as 2018 charitable gifts.

Q: If I donate online at 12:00 am on 1/1/19, is that eligible for the 2018 calendar year?

A: Unfortunately, no. Per IRS regulations, all donations must be processed or received per the guidelines above by 11:59pm on 12/31/18 to be considered a 2018 charitable gift.

Q: How can I give a gift of stock/bonds?

A: All gifts of stock or bonds must be transferred and received by the Food Share’s brokerage account on or before 12/31/18 to be eligible as a 2018 charitable gift. If you have any questions, please contact Corrina Hawkins, Director of Donor Relations, at (503) 581-3855 and she will assist you.
